Everyday life with baby

Baby bedtime routine: Mum and Dad as a team

Which book do we read at bedtime? Where are the pyjamas? Does the song come before or after the story? When one parent usually handles the evening, the little details can stay in that person's memory. A short, shared ritual helps the other parent know what comes next, without a long explanation at the end of the day.

What is a baby bedtime routine?

A bedtime routine is a set of familiar actions your family chooses before sleep. The NHS says a simple, soothing routine may help a baby settle. HSE notes that newborns are too young for strict routines. Here, the focus is organising care around your child, without a compulsory bedtime or a promise of uninterrupted nights. Start with a few things you already do

Choose a short sequence your family knows: perhaps pyjamas, a favourite book and a song. These are possible steps, rather than a compulsory checklist. Arrange them in the order that works for you and leave room to respond to your baby's needs. When a pause is needed, the list can wait.

What is done, and what comes next

The ritual screen brings together your ordered steps and this evening’s progress.

  • A checkmark for completed steps and who marked them.
  • A clear indication of the next step.
  • Done → Next step to keep going.

Write down the details you normally say aloud

A useful note is specific: ‘The animal book is in the basket beside the armchair’ says more than ‘Read something’. Add the song's title or where the pyjamas are ready. You do not need to describe every movement. Record the detail that would save the next person a question.

Agree how you will take turns

Decide who starts and how you will show where you have reached. One parent might prepare the pyjamas while the other continues with the book. Another evening, one person may handle the whole ritual. At handover, say what is done and whether anything unusual happened. The same approach can help another trusted caregiver join in.

Example: Mum starts, Dad continues

These are fictional, parent-chosen steps, not a recommended schedule, fixed times or a compulsory order.

  1. 01Pyjamas — Mum has finished and marked the step done.
  2. 02Favourite book — Dad can see what is next and the note about where the book is.
  3. 03Song — its title is written down so both parents know it.

Arrange Our Evening Ritual in SweetWonder

SweetWonder brings your baby tracker and shared bedtime routine together, so both parents know what comes next.

Open the ritual for the right child, add your steps and short instructions, and arrange them in your chosen order. Each baby has a separate ritual.

After saving, choose Start Tonight to follow this evening's checklist. The checkmarks show what is done, who marked it and which step comes next.

  • Give each step a short, clear name.
  • Add only instructions that help the next caregiver.
  • Mark completed steps or use Done → Next step.

Follow shared progress with a shared baby profile

Share the baby's profile with the other parent to access the same ritual on two phones.

Progress updates while the ritual screen is open and connected to the internet. Before continuing, check the marks. If they are out of date, confirm what is done with each other.

Make changes for the next evening

Edit your steps for the next evening. A ritual already in progress keeps its original order.

If you start a new evening before finishing the previous one, the app asks for confirmation before clearing the checkmarks.

Leave room for different evenings

Sometimes the book will go unread, a longer pause will be needed, or the other parent will do something in their own way. Checkmarks help you keep each other informed. Change a step that no longer helps, or add to an unclear note. A shared ritual should make sense to both of you and remain manageable on a tired evening.

Keep the sleep space safe

For every sleep, place your baby on their back on a firm, flat sleep surface, without pillows or toys. An organised ritual does not replace safer-sleep guidance or individual advice from your baby's clinician. NHS: safer sleep

Try this evening: write down three steps of your own and one useful note. Then ask the other parent to read the list and say whether the next step is clear.
